The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for zinc is 11 mg. for men and 8 mg for women. It is slightly higher for women who are pregnant and lactating, 11 mg. and 12 mg. respectively. Vegetarians, especially vegans, endurance athletes, and individuals with impaired absorption due to medical conditions, as well as anyone already diagnosed with a zinc deficiency, all require additional zinc. A complete physical examination and blood work assessment by a physician will determine whether a person’s present dietary intake is adequate or if and how much supplemental zinc should be taken. The Upper Tolerable Limit for zinc has been set at 40 mg. per day.
