HOW OUR PROGRAM WORKS

Live-Interactive Synchronous Classes (9 weeks): 

  • Synchronous hours are live sessions that you are required to attend over a period of nine weeks to meet NBHWC requirements.
  • You’ll participate in real-time discussions, lectures, or activities led by the instructor.

Asynchronous-Prerecorded (Health and Wellness Modules):

  • These modules are prerecorded and can be accessed at your convenience.
  • You can start working on these modules as soon as you register for the course.

Practical Skills Assessments (PSA):

  • There are three live PSA sessions scheduled outside of class.
  • Each PSA session lasts approximately one hour.
  • You’ll be required to participate in these sessions with a classmate and the PSA instructor.
  • These sessions assess your practical skills in a hands-on manner.
  • You will receive one-on-one feedback from the PSA Instructor.

Bonus: Support for 50 coaching sessions

The NBHWC requires graduates from approved courses to complete 50 coaching sessions before applying for the national exam. These coaching sessions only need to be 20 minutes in duration. For example, you could have five clients with ten ongoing sessions or ten with five ongoing sessions.  HWCA doesn’t provide the clients. Beginning with the 7/9/24 cohort, HWCA will provide a website, appointment calendar, and coaching forms (free of charge) to help you complete your coaching sessions. The website integrates with Zoom. SMS texting is available for an extra monthly fee.

Live Online Instruction

WHAT IS A HEALTH COACH?

According to the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaches, “Health and Wellness Coaches partner with clients seeking self-directed, lasting changes, aligned with their values, which promote health and wellness and, thereby, enhance well-being.” The American Medical Association (AMA) defines a coach as a non-physician health care professional certified by NBHWC or NCHEC.

Research studies have clearly shown that having a health coach can be very beneficial in facilitating behavior changes conducive to a healthier lifestyle. Given that the United States is now experiencing an epidemic of obesity, diabetes, and other diseases related to poor nutrition and physical inactivity, health coaches can play a vital role in helping to combat the problem. As a health and wellness coach, the coach is in a great position
to serve as an accountability partner to their clients.

Director and CEO

Janet is a Medical Laboratory Scientist and Registered Dietitian.  She has extensive healthcare experience in hematology, immunology, chemistry, microbiology, nutrition, and teaching that spans over a 30-year period. Passionate about teaching others and developing educational programs to better serve the community and other healthcare providers. 

Cherice Godard MS, NBC-HWC

Instructor

Cherice Godard is a seasoned health coach and health coach educator.  She holds a Masters of Health Sciences in Integrative Health and Wellness and a BS in Public Health Education.  Since becoming a National Board-Certified Health and Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC) in 2017, she has practiced health coaching both independently and within a clinical care team.  As a faculty member of the University of Portland’s School of Nursing and Health Innovations (UPSONI), Cherice developed educational materials were approved by the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC), taught health coaching skills to undergraduates, and mentored students who aimed to become professional credentialled health coaches.  She enjoys the process of teaching coaching skills and helping students develop their ability to partner with clients in a way that both inspires and supports their potential. 

Meg Reichert MS,  NBC-HWC

Assistant Director and Lead Instructor

Meg is a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach. She holds additional certifications in Integrative Nutrition, Personal Training, Weight Loss Specialist, Culinary Coaching, and soon to be certified in functional nutrition. Meg holds a Masters Degree in Counseling and has previously worked as a therapist before moving into a wellness coaching role.  Meg currently works as a health and wellness coach for women and individuals with autoimmune disorders. She is a busy mother of two and currently resides in Colorado.

Jessica is a National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach. She holds a Master’s Degree in Exercise Science & Wellness Coaching, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics. She has experience coaching across many wellness areas such as nutrition, weight loss, tobacco cessation, pain, stress, and more. She has worked as a coach for Veterans & Active Duty members, along with designing coaching programs for these populations. Gina is a licensed Behavior Specialist and Health Coach with a master’s degree in education. She is dedicated to empowering individuals to lead healthier lives through movement, lifestyle modifications, and behavior change programming. She uses her educational background to design educational materials that are empowering to others, and brings extensive experience from her experience at Florida Blue and Noom. Gina is a dynamic instructor who interacts with her students to engage them fully in active participation.

Instructor

Heather Joyner is an experienced health professional with a twenty year history of helping others manage their health and chronic conditions. In 2017, Heather was among the first cohort in the county to obtain the certification of National Board-Certified Health and Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC). In addition, she holds a Master’s Degree in Social Work and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She has extensive experience working with individuals in the primary care practice setting. Her passion for wellness, both personal and professional, is foundational to her work. Heather holds a special interest in educating others in the fundamentals of health coaching. Outside of work, she enjoys staying active, spending time with her family, and following her favorite sports teams.

Stephannie currently works as a Nationally Certified Health and Wellness Coach focusing on Nutrition, Exercise, Mindfulness, and Stress Management. She also works as a Certified Pilates Instructor. She holds a Master of Science in Integrative Health and Nutrition and an NBC-HWC coaching credential. Her passion is helping others realize their personal potential through short and long term goal setting. Stephannie has a diverse professional background, which includes 4 years in the U.S. Air Force.

FAQs

Do you offer a payment plan?

Yes, we offer 3, and 6 month payment plans. The student pays a $500 dollar (non-refundable) down-payment to hold the spot in class, then the payment plan begins. 

Do I have to pay for the Nutrition Factors platform in addition to the training program?

No, HWCA covers the first year membership for each student. After the first year, if you decide to continue to use the platform, the prices to our students is $79.99/ month for 50 clients. 

How much time do I need to spend on homework?

Each student is different and learns and works at a different pace. Most students spend about 10  hours/week in class and doing modules, and  assignments.

Why should I take the National Exam for Health Coaches?

At this time, health coaching is not a state licensed profession, However, to show your clients or employer that you have meet industry standards, and are not just someone without training or credentials, we highly encourage you to become certified. In fact, the American Medical Association (AMA) defines a coach as a non-physician health care professional certified by NBHWC or NCHEC.  

Can I take the NBHWC exam without finishing a training course?

No, the NBHWC requires all examinees to have met certain requirements before taking the exam, therefore a student must complete training from an approved NBHWC training program, and finish 50 (20-minute coaching sessions). See NBHWC.org for more information. 

Do you offer day, night and weekend courses?

We don’t record these demos but if you miss one or want a refresher, you’re welcome to register for another.

What are the NBHWC requirements to take the national exam?

The NBHWC has different requirements than HWCA.

To Qualify for the National Board Certification Exam you must:

  • Complete an NBHWC Approved Training Program
    • Applicants will be required to upload a certificate of completion and/or the NBHWC Exam Eligibility Letter. The following information must be included with proof of eligibility:
      • Program Name
      • Date of Completion
      • Date of Final Practical Skills Assessment
      • NBHWC Seal of Approval
  • Complete 50 health and wellness coaching sessions
  • Document completion of an associate’s degree (or higher) or 4,000 hours of work experience

Eligibility requirements must be completed prior to the exam application deadline.  

When will I receive my HWCA certificate.

You will receive your HWCA certificate of completion 2-3 weeks after successful completion of the course, and paid tuition.

When will I be able to take the National Exam offered by the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaches?

The exam is offered twice per year. Each student must meet the requirements set by NBHWC.

What Credentials will I have after I successfully take the NBHWC exam?

You will be able to add the esteemed NBC-HWC credentials behind your name.

How soon can I start the course?

We strive to get our students started as quickly as possible. Start dates do vary. You can work a counselor to see what starting date is best for you.

What curriculum does HWCA cover?

The HWCA training program covers the basics of health coach structure, processes, ethics, law, and follows the NBWHC guidelines to help you become a certified coach with NBWHC.  We also offer a review session prior to the national exam.
